What about the Shredded Cheese for this Challenge

โ€ข

For this month’s challenge (reducing plastic waste from deli meat and cheeses), I’ve been buying blocks of cheese from the cheese kiosk at the store and shredding it as needed. There isn’t anything wrong with this system. It’s just sometimes I miss the convenience of packaged shredded cheese. It would be nice to go to the fridge and grab what I need instead of going through the whole process every time. I was still trying to decide on a good way to store my shredded cheese when I came across this…

There’s a Tool for That!

Cheese graters for mason jars! I was so excited when I found these! I first saw them at my localย zero-waste store. Unfortunately, they were out of stock but I was able to get them online. They’re made by a Colorado company calledย Mason Jar Lifestyle.ย (I don’t have any affiliate connection with them, I just really like their products). They have lots of great stuff on their site so if you’re looking for ways to multitask your mason jars,ย definitelyย check them out.

Mason Jars are Great for Reducing Cupboard Clutter

I love using mason jars ๐Ÿ™‚ This is a random story, but I started utilizing mason jars more whenย I wasย considering getting a tiny house. While downsizing, I found I could cut down on a lot of my kitchen items like glasses and storage containers by using mason jars.ย Now withย great tools like this cheese grater, I can get even more use out of the jars!

How Well Does it Work?

I’m still testing them out but so far I really like how easy they are to use. There is a wide mouth and regular size grater lid. In the picture, I used the wide-mouth lid and a pint jar. You just screw the lid onto the mason jar, start grating the cheese, then swap out the grater lid for a regular one for storage.

The grater itself works well for cheese. What I’m testing now is more related to the storage of the shredded cheese. Home shredded cheese doesn’t have any anti-caking agents that are in the prepackaged shredded cheeses. So, I’m curious to see how well it keeps in the jar. I also need to try veggies with these new graters to help me decide if I still need to keep my larger grater on standby.ย

Just a note – I found this cheese article byย Healthlineย to be very helpful. It covers the recommended storage length of different cheeses. I’m including the link in this post in case anyone else wanted to know more about cheese storage.
